I'm not much for frying foods at my house but I love pretty much everything mushrooms! This was my first time making a beer batter and I must say, I love how they turned out!

The batter ended up being light and airy after frying. It had just the right touch of seasoning.

Is spicy your thing? You can always increase the amount of cayenne to your preference. I did end up serving ketchup as a dipping sauce to keep it simple.

If you're like me and no one else in your house likes mushrooms, you can cut the recipe in half for a smaller serving!

FAQs

Why is it called beer battered chips? ›

Indeed, beer is a key ingredient in well-made fish and chips. Adding beer to a batter made from flour and water boosts flavor and provides a “lighter, crispier” coating, Gordon Ramsay explains in a 2005 episode of “The F Word.”

What does beer battered do? ›

The alcohol in the beer also plays an important role in moderating the internal temperature and crisping the crust. Alcohol evaporates faster than water, so a beer batter doesn't have to cook as long as one made only with water or milk. The faster the batter dries, the lower the risk of overcooking the food.

Why is beer batter so crispy? ›

Yeast and carbonation in beer acts like yeast in bread, making the batter go puffy as it cooks so it's thin and light rather than thick and greasy. It's like Japan's famous tempura; Ice cold beer is used to make the batter cold. The shock of cold batter hitting the hot oil makes it go super-crispy.

Can you use water instead of beer for fish batter? ›

The reason beer is a popular choice for battered fish is because the carbonation in the beer makes for a light, crispy coating. That same carbonation and the slight acidity of the beer also helps create a batter that's very tender and flaky. You can get these same results with bubbly water or a NA beer.

Should I put an egg in my beer batter? ›

Beer Batter Ingredients

These are the simple ingredients you'll need to make this basic beer batter recipe: Flour: This homemade beer batter starts with all-purpose flour. Cornstarch: Cornstarch ensures an extra crispy, light fry every time. Egg: An egg creates a more delicate crust and helps seal in moisture.

What kind of beer is best for beer-battered fish? ›

What is the best beer for fish batter? It's best to save your craft beers for drinking, and use a simple light beer. Anything from very light (PBR) to a mild British ale (like Newcastle Brown Ale) will work well.

Is there alcohol in beer battered chips? ›

There is a teeny amount of residual alcohol unless the dish is over-fried. But it's very, very little. What does beer do to the batter in a beer-battered fish fry? The key to frying tempura quickly is to evaporate excess water in the batter.

Is there beer in beer battered fries? ›

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, paprika, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, 2 teaspoons salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Add 1 cup of the beer and stir until smooth, adding more beer a tablespoon at a time if necessary until the batter is the consistency of heavy cream.

Is fish and chips always beer battered? ›

Battered fish is coated in flour and dipped into a batter consisting of flour mixed with liquid, usually water but sometimes beer. Some newer modifications to the recipe may add cornflour, and sometimes use soda water instead of beer.

What is the difference between beer battered and breaded? ›

Batters can range in crisp from tempura (the crunchiest) to beer battered (not so crunchy). Breaded seafood is not the greatest in a deep fat frying capacity. All those small bits of sloughed off breading can cloud up the fryer, burning and adhering to other pieces, especially if you're frying in multiple batches.
