protest tenure rejection ternoon, claimed the school was By The Associated Press reneging on a promise made YONKERS, N.Y. More than a dozen students at Sarah Lawrence College went on a hunger strike yesterday to protest the school's failure to award tenure to a popular African professor. "White students and students of color still experience the institution as they did 60 years ago, excluded from the process," said Malka Cyril, a black student who is one of the 15 hunger strikers. The professor involved is Horatio Williams, a Liberian native who teaches sociology and minority affairs classes. He's been at the school for five years, during which he was reviewed twice, as is outlined in the tenure rules, according to Sarah Lawrence spokeswoman Diane Fusilli.
Fusilli said that tenure "is a serious, well-considered and arduous process" that is also confidential. "It has nothing to do with race, it has to do with qualifications," she said. Student opinion of a faculty member was factored into the final decision, according to a statement on the tenure process issued by the school. five years ago to diversify its faculty and classes. The promise was made after students held a five-day protest in 1989: The students issued an open letter to the administration and "Community at Large," charging the administration ignored them and that the college lacked commitment to "an education which reflects a realistic world view." The letter contained a list of demands, including the retention of Williams and the establishment of a variety of ethnic programs. A recently released report on diversity at the college said that 15 percent of the faculty, or 20 professors, were black. It also lists a wide range of ethnic study courses, such as Asian-American History and African Literature, available at the school. The faculty issued a letter to students on Tuesday saying the tenure decision was "final and will not be reviewed." The faculty had learned of the planned hunger strike and urged the students to reconsider, asking that, instead, students meet with the faculty to discuss their concerns.
