His beloved wife, Nancy Campbell Freeman, pre- ceded him in death two years earlier.

Born in Statesboro, GA, in 1924, he moved to Greenville County in 1928. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he returned to Greenville where he operated an automotive repair business and was active within the com- munity. In 2006, he and his wife moved to Agape Assisted Living in West Columbia, S.C. Through- out his life he enjoyed gardening and spending time with his fami- ly.

He loved a good joke. He was handy and could fix anything. He is survived by his three sons, Stan (Sally) Freeman of West Columbia, SC, the Very Rev. Stephen (Beth) Freeman of Oak Ridge, TN, Charles (Mary) Freeman of Pittsfield, Illinois. Al- so surviving are eleven grand- children; three great-grandchil- dren; two sisters, Dorothy Smith, of Clinton, SC, and Betty Hinman, of CA; and a brother, William D.

Freeman, of CA. He was predeceased by a sis- ter, Irma Ruth Elrod. Mr. Freeman and his wife were members of St. John of the Ladder Orthodox Church in Greenville.

Pe- ter, beloved son of the late John Edwin Linder and Mildred Hines Linder, was born in Washington, DC on June 17, 1943 and moved with his parents to Columbia in 1946. He is survived by his wife, Dee Ann Henry, his step children Malachi and Alia, step grand- children Luka and Sarah Ruth, brother Bill Linder, sister-in-law Lynne Linder, nephew William and niece Caroline. At Dreher High School, where he graduated in 1961, Peter won a state-wide high school arts award and began his career as a creative artist.

He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and spent his years studying, creating, and sharing his art in a number of locations in the U.S. and abroad: New York City, Con- necticut, Ireland, New Zealand and Belize. Peter spent his last years back home in Columbia, still studying, creating, and shar- ing his art. He worked mainly in the visual arts, but was well versed in all areas of art, life and philosophy. He was also known throughout the area for his work with and love of bicycles and his volunteer work at the Blackbird Bicycle Co-op.

He expressed his wonder at the physical and spiritual bril- liance of life through his art. His artistry was not just paint on pa- per or wood. His life and the liv- ing of it was experienced as art too. He led a life of great integrity and grace to the end. There will be no formal rites or ceremonies.

As he wished, Pe- ter will be cremated and his ash- es dispersed into Roaring Water Bay in County Cork, Ireland. As he desired, a wake will take place on September 10, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at his home in Colum- bia. Major was born on April 1, 1929 in Saluda County, a son of Sim and Blanche McCarty. He was a graduate of Ridge Spring High School. He served in the USAF for four years. He earned a B.S.

degree from Newberry Col- lege and a M. Ed. degree from Furman University. He also did post graduate work at USC. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Farris Bush McCarty of Saluda, son Van McCarty and wife Susan of Lexington, daugh- ter Jane Montei and her husband Mike and son-in-law Tom from Summerville.

Grandchildren: Matthew, Mi- cah, Mackenzie, Madelynn and Major McCarty, Allison and Sa- rah Montei, and Daniel Sisters, Frances Crouch and Van Rae Bledsoe of Saluda, Marian Rister of West Columbia, broth- ers F.D. McCarty of Columbia and Sim McCarty of Belvedere. He was predeceased by sister Julia Boozer and brothers Bruce, Tyrone, and Thomas Lee McCar- ty and a daughter, Marcia McCarty Major was employed at Salu- da High School from 1957-1965 where he taught Social Studies, coached Varsity Baseball, Varsi- ty Girls Basketball and Varsity Football. He was Principal of Sa- luda High School for five years. He was Principal of Summerville High School from 1965-1970.

He was employed by Lexington Richland School District No. 5 as principal of Irmo High School and Irmo Middle School from 1970-1975. He was selected Out- standing Principal of the Year by the South Carolina School Counselor Association. He was the Superintendent of Saluda County School District No. 1 from 1975-1976.

In 1976 he re- turned to Irmo where he served as principal of Leaphart Elemen- tary and retired as the principal of Irmo High School in 1986. He relocated to Saluda, SC in June of 1987. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church, where he previously served as deacon and Brotherhood Director, and as a teacher of The Senior Sunday School Class Major will be remembered as a strong Christian, a devoted husband, loving father and a proud grand- father. As an educator and coach he was a positive influence in the lives of everyone he encoun- tered. He will be deeply missed by us all.
