From alleviating human suffering to addressing health inequities, these narratives all weave together a theme of service to others and the greater good. "This Juneteenth, we reflect on our continued journey toward equity and liberation for all," wrote Dean Megan Ranney and Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Mayur Desai, MPH ‘94, PhD ‘97, in a note to the Yale School of Public Health community this week."The legacy of slavery continues to significantly impact public health for Blacks in America," they wrote. "Historically rooted systemic biases lead to inequities in access to healthcare, non-medical health resources, and structural drivers of good health. The stress associated with racial discrimination further contributes to adverse health outcomes, highlighting the enduring effects of historical injustices."In honor of Juneteenth, they urge participation in local events sponsored by the International Festival of Arts and Ideas: www.artidea.org/calendarYou can learn more about YSPH's initiatives to address the public health impacts of the legacy of slavery on our website: m.yale.edu/cfkq"This Juneteenth, let us renew our commitment to learning from our past, participating actively in our community, educating with historical awareness, and working towards a future of equality and justice," wrote Ranney and Desai. "We look forward to your involvement in our events and initiatives. "
