How do I find out if there's a power outage in my area? ›

Outages typically last 1-2 hours.

During a major storm, our top priority is restoring power to hospitals, nursing care facilities, police and fire stations, communication facilities (radio and television stations), and sanitary pumping facilities.

Green means that the lines are energized, orange means that there is a reported outage in the area, and red means that the outage is confirmed. In some rare cases, an area may show as blue on the map because of advance knowledge of a future outage.

As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power.

It's perfectly safe to shower during an outage or storm. The main risk is that showering in the dark increases your risk of slipping and falling, which is why you should have a battery-powered light in your bathroom. It's a safer alternative to candles and gas lamps that represent a fire hazard.

Turn off and unplug small appliances

Televisions, computer equipment, game consoles, fans, lights and all other smaller appliances should be unplugged, especially if they were in use when the power went out. Larger appliances, such as refrigerators, should not be unplugged.

With the most annual power outages, Maine is surely left in the dark. The Pine Tree State tops the list with an average of 4.35 power outages every year, a stark increase above the national average of 1.62 per year.

This way, you can save energy without overburdening your cooling system when you return home. Cool early: Pre-cool your home during off-peak hours (before 3 p.m.) and increase the thermostat setting slightly during peak hours (3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) to reduce costs.
